Your Morning Dump… Is Jared Sullinger ready for a special season?

Chuck - Red's Army August 4, 2015 Jared Sullinger, The Morning Dump 5 Comments

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

With Sullinger, it’s probably best to believe it when you see it. Though he has vowed to change his body before, he has never committed fully to the task. In February, Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge singled out the big man as the only player on the team who hasn’t met his conditioning goals.

Still, the offseason reviews have been positive. Near the end of June, Sullinger revealed to the Boston Globe he is working out with Lucas in Houston. A few weeks later, head coach Brad Stevens said he has heard optimistic reports about his power forward’s work. Lucas has tweeted pictures of Sullinger running outside in 96-degree heat and apparently finishing (or starting) a boxing workout.

While  my optimism about Jared Sullinger’s fitness is guarded (scroll through John Lucas’ timeline and you’ll see high praise for all of his clients), I’d rather read reports like this one than none at all.

Sullinger got a ton of scrutiny this season from fans and media, and it was justified. There were issues with fitness and punctuality. On the court, his game flat-lined. I’m pretty sure Danny Ainge dangled Sullinger in nearly every trade proposal this off-season.

Even though he’s just 23, next year is make or break for Sullinger in Boston. After earning $2.2 million in 2015-16, he’ll be due a $3.3 million qualifying offer for 2016-17. Do I think Sullinger will be wearing Celtic green in his next contract? No, but that has more to do with the status of the rebuild than him personally. Even someone with my cynical perspective would be silly to write off someone of his talent and age.

Sully isn’t the only young forward on the hot seat. Yes, I’m looking at you Kelly Olynk.

I’d be a lot more optimistic if he was training in Boston with the Celtics staff.

I’ll give him the benefit of doubt. Sounded like Sully had to many people chirping in his ear and his focus and commitments might have been so spread out that he couldn’t really focus at the task at hand. Glad he is getting in shape, and not the round shape.

I’ve been saying this for about a year now. This coming season is where we find out what Sully is made of. Is it Iron or Jello? Who knows, I’m leaning towards Iron.

He has every reason in the world to get in the best shape of his life and sustain it throughout the season, and play as hard as possible. Its the quintessential turning point in his career and he knows it.

Its a contract year coming off of a season that sputtered out and stagnated because of weight and conditioning issues. This will be the most motivated he’s ever been in his life.

Which is why I couldn’t disagree more with this statement, “I’m pretty sure Danny Ainge dangled Sullinger in nearly every trade proposal this off-season.”

Was he dangled in some? Maybe. But Danny and the rest of the Org. aren’t stupid.

They want to see what happens with Sully this year before cashing out and giving up on the chance that Sully could be really good.

i am personally going to buy into the idea that sully is doing it the right way now. I’m a big believer that if he can stop having a Pillsbury doughboy physique, dude can be a major asset on our team. Also, as I stated in the comments section on a previous article, I really wish people would stop thinking about Sully based on what he did when he came back from injury and was clearly not in NBA shape or even YMCA shape for that matter.

All I’m going to say is come correct Sully, in body and mind, and leave it all on the floor every night. That’s all any of us ever wanted, if the game isn’t coming to you attack the rim more. Not that I believe Sully reads blogs but there’s the wish list.
