Your Morning Dump… Where Jared Sullinger is eating and saying the right things (for now)

Chuck - Red's Army May 24, 2015 Celtics News, Jared Sullinger, The Morning Dump 27 Comments

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here… highlighting the big story line. Because there’s nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump.

“I think it’s just, they want me to go one step further,” he said. “I think that’s what it is — one step further. That’s pretty much what I’m doing [this offseason], every day at Ohio State. I’m trying to push myself to be that guy, but also who I want to be. I’m slowly working on it and still pushing myself.”

He remained evasive on exactly what changes he has made, but suggested it’s been a sizable lifestyle overhaul, all with the hope of “being the guy that I know I can be.”

Sullinger, who is set to earn a modest $2.3 million next season, is extension-eligible this summer. Both the Celtics and Sullinger’s camp have hinted that contract talks are more likely to occur next summer, when Sullinger would be headed toward restricted free agency.

“Right now, everyone is doubting me,” Sullinger said. “I get everything, ‘He’s not this, he’s not that. He’s not the guy that we thought he was going to be, potentially.’ I’ve heard it all. I use it as motivation. Nothing is going to change [with his approach], I’m going to keep working, working as hard as possible.”

ESPN Boston

Jared Sullinger looks noticeably slimmer than he did in May 2014, but we’ve been down this road before.

We chronicled Sullinger’s weight loss in August and September of 2014. And then we learned that Sully ballooned up to 300 lbs at some point during last season.

Jared hints at a lifestyle change and that’s the only way he’s going to beat the weight issue.

Next season is make-or-break for Sullinger in Boston. His restricted-free-agent status coincides with the team’s unprecedented salary cap flexibility. Over the next two off-seasons, Danny Ainge is going to make long-term investments in players that will shape this roster for the future.

If Sullinger can get his act together, then he’ll likely earn a spot.

On Page 2, Jackie MacMullan lobbies for Khris Middleton.

“The Celtics can’t afford to wait. They’ve got to get someone this summer,” Jackie MacMullan said, “and I don’t know that they have to get LaMarcus Aldridge — of course, that would be lovely — but maybe you go for Wesley Matthews Jr. and decide, if you he’s coming off that injury, if he’s healthy enough.”

MacMullan suggested Khris Middleton, who had an outstanding season from the advanced statistics standpoint. Tobias Harris is another player that could be considered.

“The Celtics don’t want DeMarre Carroll,” MacMullan said. “They want the next DeMarre Carroll — they want to discover DeMarre Carroll, and get value for that.”

CSNNE

Just like any GM, Danny Ainge wants value guys. I’d say Isaiah Thomas and Jae Crowder are value guys. Fortunately, the C’s have money to spend and aren’t restricted to value guys.

I don’t know much about Khris Middleton but he’s becoming a hot name for teams interested in RFAs. If the Magic hire Scott Skiles, there’s speculation Tobias Harris will bolt Orlando because those two didn’t get along in Milwaukee.

File under: 2 more guys the Celtics might consider signing.

And finally, Steph Curry is ridiculous.

If you’re not watching the WCF, you are missing some beautiful basketball by Steph Curry.

I’ve come to expect the torrid 3 point shooting, but those floaters?

Nasty.

Tobias Harris is the most intriguing RFA to me. Defense is poor, but he can score as a wing or stretch four. He’s progressed every year he’s been in the league and he’s still very young. Has the potential to be a number 1 scoring option.

    • thedude

Agreed. Loved him out of Tennessee, and seriously questioned why he didn’t get any burn with the Bucks. He’s really hit the ground running in Orlando.

  • Brad Sontag

Sully will keep it together till somebody is dumb enough to give him a big contract.

  • mark cayanan

Hopefully he comes back in great shape he could probably be the same player as Carlos Boozer in Utah if he is healthy

  • RedsLoveChild

Zero confidence in Sully`s ability to self-motivate himself to get in shape, let alone to stay in shape.

Celts got super lucky when Piece fell into their laps on draft night `98.
As much as we all hoped history would repeat itself with Sully in 2012, it`s not gonna happen,
The first 20 GM`s drafting in `12 definitely got it right.

    • MJ

You’re right. Houston just NAILED IT with Royce White…

      • RedsLoveChild

Houston gambled on a guy with an anxiety disorder…Boston gambled on a guy with an eating disorder.

At least in the case of Sully….Houston did NAIL IT.

        • MJ

But Im pretty sure if they could do it again Houston would have gladly taken Sullinger. Atleast he has shown that he can play in the NBA. And pal, it was the bulging discs in his back that got his stock to drop, not the weight issue. I’m not excusing Sully because his lack of discipline with his weight has been very disappointing. But hey I’d rather have a guy who’s main trouble is staying in shape rather than a guy who’s main trouble is he’s just not that good to begin with.

          • RedsLoveChild

I`m sure Ainge felt the same way you did in 2012.
            Today? He`s disgusted with JS.

He showed JS film of him huffing and puffing after 3 minutes running the floor, taking off plays. Pretty pathetic for a 23 year old.

No GM is begging Ainge to work out a deal so they can obtain Sully.

          • MJ

Actually I can say some of them blew it, because the point of the NBA draft is to draft players who are good and make your team better. Jared Sullinger, even if he’s not exactly in the best place right now, has proven he is a good player and he can make your team better or atleast more so than several of the guys that were taken ahead of him.

By your logic, Philly didn’t blow it in 2010 when they took Evan Turner over Demarcus Cousins because they were “right” about Cousins’ maturity issues. Tell me does that make any sense? Of course not. Just because a team may be right about a players certain issue does not mean they were right not to draft him. I’ll re-iterate, if there was a draft re-do, Sully would have been in the top 10-15. And I’ll tell you again, Sully was going to be a top 10 pick in the draft until the report came out about his back and NOT his weight. Teams weren’t primarily afraid of Sully’s conditioning, they were worried about him becoming Brandon Roy part deux.

I don’t disagree that Sully’s weight is a problem. It clearly is, but to say that other teams who took proven turds like Thomas Robinson or Austin Rivers over him made the right choice because they were right about Sully’s weight, that’s just ludicrous.

          • RedsLoveChild

Sully has proven to be good player?
When? Where? All Sully has ever proved is that he was a good player in college for 2 years. The NBA is a completely different animal!

Love, Aldridge, Griffin, Davis, Randolph, Pau, Monroe, Milsap, Dirk, Duncan, Ibaka….these guys have proven to be good NBA power forwards. Sully? Not so much.

Back issues, weight issues…does it really matter which one?

Either way, he`s missing an average of 23 games per year in his young career, he can`t control his weight, he has no stamina, that`s why he loves hanging out at the 3-pt line where he hits an embarrassing 27% of his shots.

          • MJ

Wow when the hell did I say Jared Sullinger is a star? All the guys you just listed are at the very top of their position. I didn’t say Sully was in their level. Ever. If those players are your measuring stick for Sully, then you have some ridiculous expectations. Sully may not be the best but having 13 point and 7 rebound averages for the past 2 years to me constitutes as someone who is good and makes your team better, but it doesn’t put you in the same league as Kevin Love or Lamarcus Aldridge. How did that even come up? I thought this was about comparing Sully to others in his draft, not star-caliber players who play his position. My point is amongst Sully’s clearly frustrating issues that definitely need to be worked out, he’s proven he’s not a scrub and has turned out better than a good amount of players that were selected before him. Again, I will take “Player who has scored 13-7 with a weight problem” over “Player who can’t get more than 5-3 who stays in shape” any day of the week.

It does matter which one between back issues and weight issues because it’s a matter of fact. Read this article, which clearly states that Sully was a projected lottery pick until the tests found out about his back.

            http://espn.go.com/nba/draft2012/story/_/id/8069495/2012-nba-draft-docs-medically-red-flag-jared-sullinger-sources-say

Sully fell to us because teams were afraid his career was going to be shortened because of his back and NOT because of his weight.

          • RedsLoveChild

You do realize that weight and back issues generally go hand in hand, right?

So, in 2016, when we once again see an overweight poorly conditioned Sully missing his annual 20+ games, camping out at the 3-pt line, shooting a horrible 27%….we should feel good in knowing that it was really his back that caused him to fall so far in the 2012 draft??? Like, that really matters.

Also, I never accused you of referring to him as a “star”.
I accused you of calling him a “good player”.

          • Curt Hays

The thing with Sully is that he is skilled. You know he’s really skilled. People see that and remember it. It’s like superstition in baseball. You remember when tying your left shoe first made you get a hit that night. You forget that you struck out twice.

    • zippittyay

You’re just mad we missed out on MKG, Waiters, Thomas Robinson, Austin Rivers, Meyers Leonard, Kendall Marshall, Harkless, White, Nicholson, and Fornier, and ended up with Sully.

      • RedsLoveChild

No, I don`t want any of those guys….including Sully.

        • zippittyay

Those were among the guys “The first 20 GMs…. definitely got it right”….. and were picked *before* Sully.

          • RedsLoveChild

They “got it right” in terms of evaluating Sully. Period.

He`s out of shape….and after 3 years, he still has given us no reason to believe he ever will get in shape.

          • zippittyay

No, he would be picked around 12th if they had a do over. I’ll take a pudgy Sully over any of the guys previously mentioned and drafted before him.

          • RedsLoveChild

Fine, you can have him. Enjoy.

          • Fitzy

i hope you don’t give up on your own children this easily at the meager age of 23.

          • zippittyay

How many 20th picks could put up 31 points and 16 rebounds against the guy many say is the best young center in the game?

        • Fitzy

yeah when we were on the clock we should have said “pass”

          • Curt Hays

            LMFAO

  • Thatguy

I’m thinking Sully will be traded or Ainge let him walk next season. I dunno, I just don’t see him improving enough to be kept. I hope he proves me wrong.

Side note: Maybe it’s just me, (hopefully not) but I really want Robert Upshaw with the 28th pick.

  • http://www.facebook.com/jimmy.gallagher.357 Jimmy Gallagher

Sully shows flashes, but his lack of self discipline bothers me and he really struggles to defend “longer” players. He’s a solid player — I’m just don’t think he’s someone the Celtics should invest in too heavily. I’d rather see him as part of a package deal with picks to bring in a star player (if that’s possible). On a separate note, Steph Curry continues to impress me. Beyond the fact that he is a lights out player who can legitimately score from any part of the floor (those floaters are unbelievable, especially considering he threw them over Howard), I love his demeanor on the court. He looks collected.

  • stephen

trade sully, should have last year when he had a little more value. hell i would try to get a package ready for a S&T for deandre jordan, cause that is actually looking like a real possibility and sully should be high on the list to trade.
