Report: Celtics made trade proposals for Kosta Koufos

Kosta

ESPN’s Marc Stein references the Celtics interest in Grizzlies center Kosta Kouos within this article on Memphis’ future:

The Grizzlies’ nightmare scenario, of course, is the prospect of Koufos attracting a lucrative offer early in free agency while Gasol is still deliberating. Keeping Koufos to play behind a re-signed Gasol would presumably be too pricey for the Grizz … but losing both in the same summer would naturally be a crusher.

And the reality is that Koufos is bound to draw considerable interest as an unrestricted free agent. Rim protection is his forte, but he also coped very well against Aldridge in the Portland series and has not only proven very durable over the year but has quietly started nearly 150 games in his career. He’s more seasoned than you think.

Memphis, mind you, signed off on the risk of losing both Gasol and Koufos without compensation when it rebuffed numerous trade proposals for Koufos during the season from the likes of Cleveland and Boston.

Koufos’ name first surfaced during the Jeff Green trade negotiations. It’s fair to say the 26-year-old Koufos falls into the category of 2nd tier players they Celtics might be willing to overpay for.

How much? I’m guessing Koufos will make at least double, maybe triple the $3 million he earned last season.

I realize this is apples to oranges, but would you rather have DeAndre Jordan at 5 years, $100 million or Kosta Koufos at 5 years, $40 million?

Still Jordan at that price, but I would gladly take Koufos over many other available options (e.g. Monroe). No drama guy, reasonably young, and you can do a lot worse as your starting center.

Mo Buckeyes, Mo better!!!!!!!!!! Oden anyone??

  • Adam Stark

I’d love the celtics to get Koufus. Solid player. Just what we need, think of the hawks. He’s only 26 too, so if we gave him a 4 year 36 million deal of be ok with that. He’ll always be tradable.

2 blocks and 11 rebounds per 36 mins over his career. Not too shabby. FT% of only 61.2%.

    Kosta Koufos is gangster.

Just look at the way he flicks off his opponents while driving to the rim.

Would be a great improvement over Zeller

I wouldn’t mind him but I see no point in giving him and Zeller majority of the minutes at the 5. Id prefer one or the other and Kosta is a better defender. Im not interested in him at the price he may fetch in FA though.

Can we go back in time and just keep big Al?

i might be wrong but i think C’s were trying to acquire Koufos so he could be traded to the Cavs when they were looking for a C.

i wish and would love to have jordan, he would be a great piece for the C’s even at that price. But i doubt he or any of the other superstars will sign with us. so i would love to get Koufos. solid D, young, and very tradeable if needed and an improvement over zeller. we need to keep zeller tho, to come off the bench for sure.
