Uh oh, Paul Pierce likes being a Wizard

It’s fair to say that every true Celtics fan hopes that Paul Pierce will return to Boston and finish out his playing career with his original team. As one of the all-time great Celtics, the former captain remains more popular than anyone on the current roster.

Pierce no doubt knows this, because he’s showered with love every time he visits TD Garden to face his former squad. It also wasn’t lost on Paul that his bro, Kevin Garnett, was lovingly welcomed home in Minnesota after KG waived his no-trade clause this past February.

The Truth has a player option where he can choose to stay with the Washington Wizards for another season or leave and become a free agent. The latter route would allow him to re-sign with Boston – but…

Based on his comments during a recent interview, he might decide to stay in the nation’s capital for another season. Seems he enjoys playing the role of O.G. and mentor to the young and improving Wizards. He’s hitting big shots and talking trash at Larry Bird levels, and the Wizards are winning.

“It’s been nothing but love from the time I got off the airplane in the summer,” Pierce said. “I feel like even if it’s one year, two years, or three years I’m here, I feel like I’m going to have a relationship with these guys for a long, long time even after basketball. It seems like we connect, and I connected with the city.”

Welp.

And as the article also notes, even if P.P. leaves D.C., there isn’t a contender that wouldn’t welcome him.

Paul Pierce will likely come back to the Celtics at some point, but will be for a last-hurrah final season or on a one-day contract as a formality toward retirement? For now, Celtics fans should probably add this to the long list of uncertainties that will dominate the off-season.

Pierce shouldnt come back. He got a knife in the back by Ainge. The celts could of easily kept Pierce and still continued with the rebuild. And Im 100% behind trading everyone else, but Peirce was different. He could of bailed on this city/team when our tires were stuck in the mud and going no where. He didnt. He chose to stay here and be a part of something big. Then after the goodtimes, as soon as Danny has the chance, he doesnt show Pierce the same respect?!? F THAT! Peirce isnt Rondo, KG, or Allen. Hes a Goddam Celtic legend and trading him never should of happened. We used to be that kind of organization that respected our legends. FIrst we treated Larry like shit and hired Pitino, then Pierce. Hmmm. Wonder why we cant get any top FA’s. I would love to hear Ainge take on this.

Well said, couldnt agree more. Plus, if the wizards make it to the eastern conference Finals, why would you ever even consider leaving. Better for a Legend to go out on top.

Of course you remember that Auerbach traded Dave Cowens to the Bucks. And Easy Ed Macauley to the St. Louis Hawks.

Listen Pierce is my favorite player in the NBA, so I understand why you would say he never should have been traded.

However, the fact of the matter is the Celtics were hardly in a position like the Spurs for example. They did not have the proper ancillary talent to fill in the gaps that came with PP and KG getting older. We have no Kawhi Leonard to pass the torch to.

If the Celtics didn’t trade PP they never would have been able to fleece the Nets for assets. Assets we desperately need to help build the next championship team.

Paul Pierce himself said he would have made this trade if he was GM.

When the Celtics/Nets look back on this trade and all assets are used up, I can’t imagine anyone saying we didn’t get the best of it.
