Recap: Celtics give bare minimum in win over Knicks

If you suffered through that game on a Friday night, then you 1) have no life or b) have no life.

The Celtics beat the Knicks, 96-92, in a game that just wouldn’t die. My god that 4th quarter lasted forever. The Celtics lead peaked at 11 points in the 2nd quarter but Boston just refused to play hard enough to put away the hapless Knicks.

Boston trailed early in the 1st quarter thanks to a 3 minute scoreless stretch. The streak was broken when Isaiah Thomas banked home a 3-pointer and 1. The Celtics picked up the defensive intensity and pace in the 2nd quarter where they stretched the lead to 11 points. It was a true team effort. At one point in the 2nd quarter, 9 Celtics had at least one field goal.

Rather than step on the throttle in the 3rd quarter, the Celtics played lackluster and care-free. How bad was the defense? Andres Bargnani torched Boston for 10 of his game high 25 points. Thanks to a quick 5 point spurt by Thomas at the end of the quarter, the C’s maintained a 7 point lead.

The 4th quarter was pure torture. The Knicks refused to die and neither coach wanted to take his time-outs into the locker room. Seriously, the quarter must have lasted 40 minutes. Fortunately, style points don’t matter and the C’s ran off with the W

Green

Thomas (18 points, 6 assists) didn’t shoot the ball particularly well (4-13), but he looked light years better than he did Wednesday night vs Miami. It appears the back stiffness is finally behind him.

Brandon Bass cranked out a blue-collar double double (16 points, 10 rebounds).

Evan Turner filled up the stat-sheet once again – 15 points, 7 rebound, 5 assists and 5 TOs.

Gross

Tough night for Tyler Zeller (2 points, -10 in 12 minutes).

The birthday celebration for Clyde Frazier was a big cup of awkward. From the a cappella group to that silly skipper’s hat, nothing about this party seemed right. I’m still trying to figure out why CSNNE shared it with us.

    43 FTs?

Is there any way for people who actually attended that game to get in on a class action lawsuit for basketball malpractice?

The officiating was so bad I literally couldn’t tell if the refs were purposely helping the Knicks or if they were just incompetent.

Brad Stevens looked pissed at his players after the game and had an extended conversation with Derek Fisher like he was biding time before going into the locker to rip into the guys… Anyway, just based on him having an extended post-game convo with Fisher and the brief chats he’s been having with established coaches like Pop and Spoelstra, it seems he’s actually building bridges in the NBA — not waiting to cut bait and come to Indiana like those Hoosier fantasists are pretending.

Despite his calm mien, Stevens is an absolutely competitive guy — I don’t think he’s happy with just getting praise from Coach Pop — I think he wants to beat the guy in a 7-game series and pry the ‘chip from his lifeless fingers.

Watching these past two games — NYK and MIA — I’m very worried about the Celts. They looks like they’re sleepwalking through the games and going through the motions — like they already have the 8th seed locked down. They don’t. They need to get as close to 40 wins as possible. The effort against the Knicks would have led to a 20-pt loss to another team. I’m happy to get the victory but I can’t say I’m happy with the effort and from the looks of things, neither was Brad.

I think it has more to do with the Celtics feeling they will only put effort on games against tougher competition than games like Miami with their 4-5 top players out AND the crappiest team in the NBA, the NY Knicks.
Obviously, the Miami loss bit them hard in the ass and with the NY Knicks, you can play as crappy as you want, and you’ll still pull the W.

This upcoming week is where we actually judge the Celtics on how much they’ve truly progressed. These are challenging games coming up and I’m sure the C’s have been conserving their energy for the final stretch.
