Recap: Young Celtics flash some old school grit-and-balls in OT loss

Chuck - Red's Army December 8, 2014 Evan Turner, Kelly Olynyk, Marcus Smart, Recaps 26 Comments

Holy sh*t. I didn’t see that coming. Coming off yesterday’s upset win over the Wizards, I think everyone was prepared for a blowout loss in Washington. And it appeared that blowout was coming to fruition when the Celtics trailed by 23 points late in the 3rd quarter. But god damn this team never quit.

There were so many great plays by so many players, I don’t know where to begin. Kelly Olynyk (19 points, 11 reb), Marcus Smart (career high 23 points and suffocating defense) and Evan Turner (18 points, 8 assists, 6 rebounds) fueled the 4th quarter rally and overtime play.

The bench carried this team back and Brad Stevens rewarded them by playing them the remainder of the game. Well, most of them. Jeff Green (28 points) was the only starter to log significant minutes in OT. Jared Sullinger and Rajon Rondo remained on the bench for the final 15 minutes of action.

The Wizards won this one (133-132) because of the lightning fast John Wall (26 points, 17 assists) and savvy, clutch play of Paul Pierce (28 points). Not sure how you feel, but this is as close to a feel good loss as you can get.

The Green:

The Celtics bench scored an absurd 82 points. That’s the highest in something like 50 years.

Kelly Olynyk played his ass off in the 4th quarter and both overtimes. 7 offensive rebounds and 1 (controversial) charge.

Marcus Smart’s defense was fantastic. What did he take, 2-3 charges? He also displayed some phenomenal flopping skills.

The Gross:

Aside from the sloppy play in the 1st 3 quarters, it’s hard to focus on anything negative in this game. I will question Brad Steven’s decision to leave Sullinger and Rondo on the bench for both OTs.

Sorry to be negative, but Jeff Green lost that game. He makes the WORST decisions when he drives the paint. He was terrible in 2OT.

    • Brad P

I can’t help but feel sour in the loss as well. But Smart’s chuck with 23 seconds left on the clock was just as bad as Green’s drive.

Still it was a hell of a game. Olynyk’s fierce rebounding and Turner’s 3 were much more memorable than the bad plays we had

      • Curt Hays

Almost lost my voice screaming about that one, but Jeff did it multiple times. He just KEPT sucking.

        • Brad P

I almost forgot about the play that pissed me off the most. Stevens not calling a timeout at the end of the first OT.

          • Curt Hays

Ugh, I think I’m done talking about it. I’m just sick of feeling like we don’t have a pro on the team.

          • BIG_HITTA1

Curt, i guess you’ve thrown away your Rondo ‘RAH RAH’ pompoms, huh?!?! My how times have chg’d. Don’t worry, in about 10 wks Rondo will be traded and maybe we’ll get that pro you are looking for.

          • Curt Hays

Haha, no. Rondo is still my favorite player. Doesn’t mean I can’t be mad at him. Actually, we aren’t on speaking terms right now.

I kept screaming, “Throw the ball to Turner, Jeff!” Otherwise fun game as far as L’s go.

    • CoolRapQuote

Glad you can look at a good game objectively.

  • KWAPT

Really, REALLY would have been nice to win, but our bench guys took their starters to the brink in double OT-can’t ask for much more. This game was all but over once the Wiz started to open it up, but Smart showed so much grit & balls in leading an incredible comeback. We just don’t have a bonafide closer right now. Any way this was the clincher for me as far as not being overly mad about the loss: http://deadspin.com/john-wall-collapses-in-tears-after-emotional-post-game-1668582392

    • CoolRapQuote

Wow, that is so touching! Wall just got tons of respect from me for that. It seems like it would be way too easy to get caught up in ego, self, and self seeking motives as a young athlete millionaire. And Wall obviously has a good head on his shoulders. I’m glad you brought that to attention, KWAPT.

Pierce tho. Had to drop 28 for old times sake.

    • Dave

Not to mention he passed Reggie Miller for 16th on the all-time scoring list at our expense, even though it feels somewhat right.

      • CoolRapQuote

It’s not somewhat right. Its perfectly right.

      • forever_green

He can still get it done. If only we where further along in the rebuild. He could be doing again in green right now.

        • Dave

I’ve always been jealous of how the Spurs was able to stack up depth. That’s the way to make sure your superstar is happy and on a winning team on their way to retirement.

          • forever_green

Yes the Spurs are really a role model for the nba.

  • misel

I was there at the game. Didn’t feel like a wizards homecourt coz it was the Celtics fans who were making all the noise haha. =))

    • forever_green

Plus it was a Celtic making all those shots for the Wizards.

  • tatlıkafa

got up 5 in the morning to see the game (yeah other end of the world). was not disappointed

  • zippittyay

That game should have ended on the goaltending slap of backboard on Bass’ breakaway at the end of OT #1.

BIG message sent (to the team and to the Rondo suck-ups) last night when Rondo sat on the bench for the final 25 mins. I will give Rondo credit though as he did not sulk on the bench; he was actively rooting on the team during the comeback and he went out of his way to give encouragement to Smart. Trading deadline is in about 10 wks. See ya Rondo.
